Re: Fat-to-5k

Congrats Mike! That's great progress!

I'm 6' 245lbs and i've hit that point as well, where it's just what am I doing???? I've joined a gym and am starting to go there 3-4 times a week. It's helped immensly however, I need to cut out beer/liqour, carbs, sugar, etc. and as well as start to eat a good breakfast, less lunch/dinner and more snacks and water.

Like you, I have signed myself up for a 5k that is in a month... ha. I have been trying to train for that hardcore, but the problem is the workouts get so methodically boring, and it's tough to try to switch up the workout.

Mike, It's an inspiration to me (and i'm sure many others) that you are doing this. I will keep checking back and wish you the best of luck. seriously. I'm on my way to try towards the exact same goal.

Re: Fat-to-5k

I dont have to be at work until 8am. I have a HELL of a time getting up early. IDK how you, or anybody, does it, lol. I can diet. I can hit the gym. I can exercise. I can call myself a fatty when I eat a cookie, but I cannot, for the life of me, wake up before sunrise, lol.

I started my little diet back in November and Im down like 18lbs. 5 in the last 2 weeks or so. My ultimate goal is roughly 2-3lbs per week.

And yeah, cutting out alcohol, soda and crappy juices will help.

Re: Fat-to-5k

Good luck dude, the mental battle is so huge, like 90% of it. You've gotta push through those barriers. If your muscles really are fatigued, dont just not work out, dial it back. If your legs are sore from running do some stretching and a fast walk. You have to keep your body moving.

Re: Fat-to-5k

Week 1 Day 2 down.... It was deffinitly warmer this morning then it was monday. and my "partner" actually showed up. After i finished the routine, i did some stairs while my friend finished his workout. Hes in a lot better shape then me so he does a different routine which includes 30 pushups as he finishes a 3rd lap.. id jog by him saying "showoff" or "kiss the floor *****"

i did notice that this am seem'd a lot faster then Mondays...
my calves are massivly strong but ive come to realise my "tibialis anterior" muscles are pretty weak because 5 minutes in i started to get this sharp pain halfway down from my knee-ankle on the outside while steping on my right foot. its not the shin or calf its between in the muscle itself. This is also the same leg as the knee i messed up last year snowboarding. I had a grade 2 "sprain of my MCL" and in highschool i had torn the medial meniscus so this knee has had its work. I obviously favor this leg while doing anthing since there is absoluly no pain in my left leg... a good stretch after has it feeling ok right now.

Week1 Day 2
5 min warmup
20 min jog/walk (1/1.5min 8 times)
5 min cool down

5 minutes of stairs on the bleachers

Mike you are doing such a good job. Its hard work but if you can stay motivated and committed to changing your life you will be successful.

I have skimmed most of the thread and haven't seen you mention food, what are you eating?

Re: Fat-to-5k

Hey dude, just wanted to say props for turning your health around! I was 5'11 and 240 about 5 years ago. This being after wrestling in high school at the 152lb weight class. It took me a good year of being at the gym and running at home, but I dropped back down to 190lbs of mostly lean muscle. Looks like you've got a great workout plan already, just stick to it. I saw you mentioned being on the eliptical because your knees were hurting. Stick with it, elipticals are great cardio machines. I deployed a couple of years ago with the military and while I was in Iraq, I used elipticals all the time to keep in shape as I knew I was busting up my knees with the body armor on. I'd recommend them over a treadmill any day. Props dude, and good luck ... and remember, a lot of it is mental ... when you think "I can't," just tell yourself "I can," and keep going.
