Had a P0401 code so I decided to clean out the EGR valve and passageways in the intake manifold.

After getting everything back together I'm having worse issues.

The car will idle fine but as soon as you give it gas it will hesitate. If you hold the revs up above 2-3,000 the revs will drop back down and then go back up continuosly. Letting completely off the gas from 3,000rpm will cause a backfire. It also starts shaking like it wants to stall.

I replaced the egr and intake manifold gaskets with new ones and performed an ECU reset.

Any ideas?

I just got done dealing with the same issues because it wouldnt pass the smog test but now it passed after cleaning the manifold and valve but turns out i needed to chnge the actual valve as well an the knock sensor, currently the car doesnt backfire anymore but it idles its around 200 rpm (no, not 2k rpm) but mechanic says it might be an air leak, i would advise you to go get it check if you can. These things can get tricky

Try following all the vaccuum lines to see if you have any loose connections, hardened/cracked hoses.
