Help gas gauge

I removed the needle for the gas gauge and when I put it back on now the gauge goes all the way up to full and I am sure I am not full on fuel please help!

You may have put it on wrong.

Remove the cover and the needle, fill the tank, put it back in at full with the key on and the cluster plugged in.

Drive it ~100 miles, has it moved enough?
