you see the fork? it looks like the strut can go further down the fork. loosen the screw clamping the fork to the strut and force the strut down lower into the fork then it should give you more room to pull it out
do what I said. push he fork up the remaining part of the strut then you can push the tophat back where it belongs. once you do that, bolt the tophat back in place and then take off the fork. once the fork is off, you can just drop down the strut assembly.
Take Matt's advice...get sleep and do it tomorrow. Car stuff always takes longer and frustrates me more when I try to do it late at night. And normally, it ends up getting screwed up
