I have a 2001 V6 EX Coupe, its got 40k miles on it. I got it from a family member that I know for a fact didn't race it or ever bust the speed limit. The problem is that VTEC wont engage or at least I don't think it is, I've watched hundreds of videos on Youtube and read other forums. It will accelerate steadily to 8k rpms and then I shift. Any help will be greatly apprieciated.

You aren’t shifting through D1, D2, D3, D4 with an auto I hope. And the redline is 6250 RPM for the V6.. So either you’re mistaken or someone played with the rev limiter, which I doubt since you said your family member never ragged the car.

VTEC should be engaging about 3500 RPM if I remember correctly, it’s not super noticeable unless you have a V2. But listen to the pitch of the motor and you should be able to hear the changeover. If there is definitely no VTEC happening, then could be a whole other problem.

2 reasons why VTEC doesn't engage:

1) Oil pressure too low - check oil levels, scope leaks, are you burning oil?
2) VTEC solenoid is malfunctioning - get a new one.
