2002 4 cylinder MT.
The car runs fine most of the time and idle is where it needs to be most of the time as well. At random moments the car starts to sputter and then dies. I'm able to start the car right away and it continues to sputter then die again. It seems to accelerate fine, and after I turn it back on and drive for a bit, it levels out and starts running fine again. This has been happening randomly for the last few months.
I have checked fuel pressure which is fine (by the time I checked it, the car was already running fine again.)
I have replaced:
- Distributor cap and rotor
- Spark plugs and wires
- Air filter
- IAC valve

I have also cleaned out the throttle body.
I have NO pending codes and the CEL does NOT come on.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hey dude, okay sounds like your having two issues here:
1. timing problem
2. Bad engine ground.

I have dealt with this issue a few times. Here are the issues that caused it.

1. Bad engine ground, engine ground was loose and engine was not getting a good negative amount of energy.

2. Timing was off a few teeth. Car drove fine, no CEL lights on, but the teeth were off and it wouldn't idle, but it would run.

Timing belt is ok. Everything is aligned. Plus the problem is intermittent.

I will check the grounds. Thanks
