I'm still on the original front pads (and rear shoes) at 60K, so I figured it was time to inspect them. The brakes work great, the rotors are smooth and I don't hear noises or feel pulsing when I brake. I measured the inner and outer pads at nearly 8mm, but I couldn't tell how much was the backing plate and how much was the actual braking material. I didn't remove the caliper. I know I wasn't including the shims. So...can I tell how much braking material is left, or do I need to lift up the caliper to really measure the pad thickness? If that's the case I'll just go ahead and change them.

if it's OEM pads, it'll tell u when it needs to be changed.... it'll make a constant grinding sound when the time has come to replace them, which should not be very long from now

that wear indicator also likes to scratch the crap out of the rotor.

Take off the wheel, on the face of the Caliper there is a square cutout, look thorugh it, and look at the pad material.
