I decided to pick up a set of Hoya Macro filters, a close-up filter set obviously. Came with +1, +2, +4 filters. If anyone could explain the possible science behind the numbers, I'd love to hear it.

I stacked all three on top of the UV filter on my 50mm f/1.8, used a desk lamp for direct lighting (a tad bit behind the camera and to the right), and set the camera on my tripod to get the shots. Most of the shutter speeds were upwards of 30 seconds.

Does this classify as macro, or just an almost-there attempt?

i would say this is almost an attempt, but nice clarity on those pics :)
to get true macro shots you either need 60mm or 100mm macro lens :)

Macro is defined as the object is at a 1:1 scale on the sensor. You would need to be much closer. Think of it like if you were taking a picture of a bee, it would have to nearly fill the frame to be a macro.
