Not all Maaco's suck, just most of them. You may have one in reasonable driving distance that actually does good work.

I would look into preping your car yourself and taking it to a real shop though. Some don't like the idea of people prepping themselves so ask what you want them to do when getting an estimate.


I would not DIY unless you truly want to learn to paint (using a real gun), or you really want to get your forearms into shape sanding something that is not likely going to hold up over time (spray paint/other consumer paint methods). The time and effort is just not worth it (IMO).

Honestly, if you are planning to give the car away, I don't know if I would even make the effort.
