Pretty much the cap is installed between the battery and the amp. The cap basically stores power. When the amp needs a sudden "burst" of power, the cap discharges, letting the amp/speakers work their hardest. Then the cap recharges. It discharges/recharges fairly instantly giving the effect of a higher quality battery, alternator, etc.

Ya, it would need installed. In it's most basic explanation, it evens the output of the battery so A. certain electronics don't over tax the battery, and B. "Eliminates" lows when the battery is running light on amperage. It's just to keep things steady and even.
just to add, it especially makes sure the amp gets all the voltage it can when the amp is hitting its peak usage, creating an even input.

^^you just beat me to the reply :p

I use a kinetic 800, and I have noticeable sound quality difference from my 1farad cap to the extra battery.
