hey I was just wondering if anyone else has had this (possible nightmare) problem before? one of the studs for the exhaust manifold broke, luckily level with the flange and not the cylinder head...

I've been working at a honda dealership for almost 3 years and I've never seen a 6thgen do this before. I've seen a ton of 01-05 civics with cracked manifolds. its a really distinct sound and I've heard it so many times I can tell the manifolds cracked without even popping the hood. Thats pretty much what my car sounded like the other day, so I pulled the heat shield off to have a better look, and saw that the manifold wasn't cracked, but one stud was broken.

If anyone else has had this problem before, how did you fix it? any advice would be really appreciated...

I was going to pull off the manifold, weld a nut to the broken stud, and hopefully remove it without breaking it. I'm just really nervous about breaking other studs in the process and mostly breaking the broken one off at the cylinder head..... because then I'm pretty much fukd. I've had several guys at work tell me to just sell it. its going to need new fuel & brake lines soon. but I've had the car for 4 years and I really just can't let go of it......

yeah its leaking pretty bad. I can smell it as soon as I open the hood, plus its noisy & sounds like a POS cruising down the road, so thats why I want to fix it.

Easiest way....for me atleast...

Take the manifold off, soak the stud in pb blaster or something, add a little heat to help loosen it, get a pair of vice grips or put two nuts on it and twist it out.

^ Exactly what Greg just said. I actually had to do this to a friend's Escort just last Sunday when installing an aftermarket manifold, it was one of the studs on the far far left - I used the two nuts tightening against each other and turning the stud out method. Didn't want to risk vice-gripping it, failing to remove it, then ruining the thread for other options.
