I had to put a paper clip from the power positive line to the negative to have it turn on at night.

That's a bad way to do it. If it grounds out, it could start a fire.
Use quick splices, simple and easy.

if you decide to look behind the cluster, be careful when you take it out. broken clips are never enjoyable to deal with
