Re: How parenting should be done

Awesome video, in fact i felt it was fb worthy lol. Anyway I skimmed through this thread reading peoples opinions. The people that judge this guy don't know **** except for what you see in the video. Those who say he's bad probably are and or were spoiled brats themselves. IMO this guy wins the father of the year award in my book... When will parents learn that talking nicely to little timmy when timmy is out of control doesn't do jack ****. I know I'll never win the son of the year award but kids are getting dumber every year because parents aren't doing their jobs. It's called discipline, parents need to try it some time. Again I'm talking about discipline...not abuse.

Re: How parenting should be done

Yes, discipline.

My beef was with his choice of chores. Making your kid do the dishes or take out the trash or even do laundry, is fine. Not sure about the shoveling fertilizer part but pouring coffee? Really? That teaches your children nothing but to be sub-serviant to someone else. What lesson does that teach? That skill's only gonna come in handy in one line of occupation; waitress. And being an IT man Im pretty sure dear old dad doesnt want his daughter ending up as hired help.

Yeah, if you're a good parent you don't need to resort to responses like that.

I applaud his desire to teach his daughter lessons, but I'm not sure how his attitude and his behavior is going to make that happen.

Its a shame that his inability to be the bigger person is going to ruin the relationship he has with his daughter for the rest of their lives.

Re: How parenting should be done

What I find more humorous is the fact that nearly every single person has said "oh, kids these days are so spoiled. When I was a kid...blah blah blah" and I find that hard to believe. I think that if you look at it, all teenagers are irresponsible in some way or another and older people will always talk about how responsible they were. Since the advent of the "teenager" in the 50's, it's been the same story. It's not that kids are getting worse, it's just that you are growing up and realizing that teenagers don't know everything. /tangent

I agree with John, if this girl had better parenting from the get go, such drastic (and not to mention immature and overdramatic) measures wouldn't be necessary.

Re: How parenting should be done

I was irresponsible. I had it easy in some regards. But I see kids these days doing things I wasnt allowed to do. Surfing the net, using cell phones, talking back to their parents. I dont know how many times Ive seen my cousins or my friend's kids talk back to their parents the way they do. I knew better but didnt have the guts to do it until I was 15 or 16. Last week my 8 year old cousin told her mother that she was smarter than she was and that if she kept making her do (whatever) that she was gonna call family services. I was like....

True dat!
The concept of grounding was lost on the Russian immigrants.
Even all the kids I knew thought it was a stupid and ineffective punishment.

Re: How parenting should be done

Grounding and physical punishment are ineffective. The child rarely learns that they did something wrong and what/how to fix it and instead learn not to do something in particular again.
