A good deal on a 28-135 IS is around $300 shipped.

What do you plan on shooting? Just random stuff? Wildlife? Action? etc..

there are expensive and cheap lenses within every brand...so don't judge a lens by its brand alone...but by the individual reputation of the lens...

you can search on flickr for pictures taken with a certain lens

what kinda things are you gonna shoot with the lens?...one lens usually won't do it all so pick and choose what you want to shoot the most

70-300mm is something for sports. i got a canon 75-300mm f/4 and it takes pretty good shots. but the 28-70mm f/2.8 like LitoCG2Rider said is a great starter. you need close up lense more than far distance lense for now. another good invest is 50mm f/1.8 which is around ~$85 shipped. i might get that 28-70mm because of the f/2.8. my other lenses is f/4.
