Took the car to the dealership for some routine stuff today. They said I was throwing a code p1486 (cooling system malfunction). They reset it and told me if it comes back on then I have to replace the PCM. The quote for the pcm was 1300 dollars!!!! if the code comes back on, is this something I can easily fix by myself or have my cousin who is a mechanic do easily? how much does a pcm cost without the labor? help please guys...

To replace the ecu is really easy, but then you have to re-program the key after wards.

And if you do need an ecu, you can definitely find it cheaper than $1300 if you do a bit of searching around.

pcm = power control module aka the ecu.. they told me i needed to replace my pcm for throwing a pcm malfunction, an then said i needed to pay XX amount to reprogram the keys, then i told them my car was 6spd they told me to go **** myself.. honda sucks.. you have to find a good personal mechanic... and im sure there is something else that could be causing that code other then a pcm malfunction

Check the engine coolant level. Is the engine coolant level low?

YES - Refill the engine coolant. If necessary, check the cooling system.
NO - Go to step 2.

Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and make sure the A/C is off.
Check the radiator fan. Does the radiator fan keep running?

YES - Check the radiator fan circuit with A/C model or without A/C model, radiator fan switch circuit, and the radiator fan switch. If the circuits and the switch are OK, substitute a known-good ECM/PCM and recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away, replace the original ECM/PCM.
NO - Test the thermostat.

Just curious since you didn't mention it - was your CEL on before you brought it in?

I bet the light was on, but there are some DTCs out there that will get stored in the PCM but not light up the CEL.
