Fuji Heavy Industries to Sell Subaru to Chinese Auto Manufacturer BYD or India based Tata
Sale announced today by CEO Ikuo Mori
Jeff Fardelli, WSJ Business Writer

Thursday, March 31, 2011, 11:50pm EDT
TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- Ikuo Mori, CEO and Chairman of Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), the current owner of the Subaru mark, has announced that Subaru will be sold off before 2012. He also stated that he personally believed it was in the best interest of the company to divest itself of the brand in wake of the earthquakes, tsunamis and rolling blackouts that wreaked havoc on the island earlier in the month.

BYD Auto, a subsidiary of BYD Company, Ltd., which has been attempting to break into the Japanese market and, to a lesser extent, the North American market, has been in secret negotiations with FHI for the Subaru brand. Tata, an Indian car and truck manufacturer who has had its eye on Subaru, apparently retained the services of Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley to broach the topic of a potential sale with FHI as well.

Unknown to Americans and much of the rest of the world until recently, Tata has been in the headlines in the last several years after creating the Tata Nano, the least expensive car in the world, priced at only $2,000. Tata also purchased Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford in June of 2008. According to Pich, previous business dealings with Tata partners and joint ventures is thought to possibly ease the negotiation process for Subau's sale. Pich did not disclose the price Tata is willing to pay for Subaru.

"Jaguar has a solid position as a mid-to-near luxury brand in the American and European marketplace," said Rohan Batra, President-to-be of Tata's potential Subaru-controlling entity. "However, Tata believes that there is room to move the Subaru brand down-market slightly into the near-economy segment as well. The Outback and Legacy will remain on the market for foreseeable future, but Subaru desperately needs a car to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Accent, Kia Forte and Honda Civic. When asked whether it was possible that Subaru production would move to India, Batra stated that it was too early to comment.

BYD, however, speaking through its Chairman Wang Chuanfu, stated that he fully expects a large portion of Subaru production to move to China by 2015 and that Subarus headquarters would be moved from Tokyo, Japan to Shenzhen, China, home of BYD Company, Ltd., as early as 2013 if acquired. Chairman Wang also refused to comment on the price BYD is willing to pay for Subaru.

BYD is the sixth-largest automaker in China, with a production capacity of 700,000 cars per year and sales of nearly 600,000 cars yearly. It has been exporting Chinese-manufactured cars since 2006 and, as of 2009, exports cars to Africa, South America and the Middle East. It has also recently opened an office in Los Angeles as part of its attempt to break into the electric car market in the United States.
