DIY: Intake Heat Shield (F23)

So I was thinking of cheap and easy ways to increase performance, and what I came to was a heat shield. Luckily the intake is already mostly blocked by the battery, but I wanted a more legit and effective shield. So I made one, and here's how.

What you'll need:
Cardboard
Tape
Sharpie
ABS Plastic sheet 15"x20"x1/8"
Dremel with cutting wheel (jigsaw might work)
Metal file/sandpaper
Some type of chisel
Skill, patience and a beer :party52:

Step 1:
Use the cardboard to make a rough template. This is immensely helpful, as you'll have to keep making small adjustments until it fits perfectly.

Step 2:
Trace your template onto the ABS plastic sheet.

Step 3:
Cut out your shield and smooth out all the cuts and edges with your metal file.

Step 4:
Use your chisel-like apparatus to make creases so the sheet can bend at a 90 degree angle.

Step 5:
Install your shield and make any adjustments needed to make it fit properly.

Step 6:
This is probably the hardest part. You need to cut the top of the shield so that it fits the shape of the underside of the hood as snugly as possible, while also allowing the hood to fully close. The reason this is so hard is because when the hood is closed, you can't see the shield to know what changes to make. So, it's pretty much a bunch of guesswork.

This is a crucial step, because heat rises according to scientific law. That means heat will be trying to get over the top of your shield more than anywhere else. I didn't feel like making it fit the contours perfectly, so I just made a fairly straight cut. Sure, it might not block heat as effectively as it could, but whatever.

Step 7:
Marvel at what you just did with your bare hands.

This isn't the first intake heat shield I've made. Here's a pic of the one I made for my 1994 Lexus ES300 a few years back.

Clean look. Nice job. As to whether there is an improvement, I have seen many videos pitting cold air intakes v. short ram on the dyno no particular one being definitive. The science is there though.

That seems simple enough. Im not totally new to Hondas but lost my liscence a couple yrs. Bak n lost my honda. Finally got my liscence bak and copped a 01 accord ex sedan vtec stick. Bak in the game now!! But been always tinkering wit it here n there n made some progress Inside n out. Imma 4sure try this one. Thanks. But I am new to forums. I got questions I wanna ask n things to show that I haven't found answers to yet and I can't find out how to post a new one. 1 question tho that ties in with ur topic. How familiar are u or any1 reading this to a supercharger for the Honda intake? Any thoughts or comments on it? Been thinking about getting one. They go on eBay for about $50

Not bad for a simple solution, repped & added to the master list. Idea is adaptable for V6 too.

As for step 6, one could also look at the fireshield under the hood to see where the stress points are and how deep when they shut the hood. This might simplify some of the guesswork on trimming.

Lol, the beauty of cardboard (to test with)!

Cut it down, until it stops bending!

Are you familiar with a turbocharger that you can install on to ur intake? Seen it on eBay n was curious about them if it would be worth to buy. They about $50
