Ok yeah the spam is ridiculous, I banned at least 30-40 people in the last two days (or at least it seems).

I changed 2 things in the registration process.

1. Email verification required: basically, the forum sends an email to the address you registered with and you have to click that link before you can post.

2. A moderator / admin must approve your registration.

What's everyone think about these changes?

The thing I haven't figured out, is when we go to moderate new members, how to tell the spammers from legit people, unless they are really obvious names like jkjkjkwerjk or something.

be like it is
well, how many bots actually go into their email and click? ya know...can they do it? lol i have no idea. shouldnt that by itself solve most problems?

on diymobileaudio.com, if you have 5 posts or less, start a thread, and include any type of html or key words like cialis or ipod, the thread will automatically be taken to an admin for review...it wont even be posted :)

if the mods/admins have to verify new members, write them an email and have them reply to roy's address. i think hell enjoy the interesting responses

So it looks like the mods and admins will have to be checking their email more frequently.

I dont like #2.. People who usally register wanna be able to post the same day and not wait 1-2 days for a mod to approve them. #1 is great. Maybe put the box where you have to enter the weird letters instead of the mod thing just my opinion though.

It's only positive for the forum if the mods and admin's check their mail frequently..Something like this you'd want a staff member on at all times. It can become a huge hassle. I'd ditch the mod/admin approval idea and stick with the email registration. Also upgrade the forum.

The forum would need to be upgraded in order to have image verification.
