adhesive for rubber water pump gasket?

Any thoughts on what to use to keep the rubber gasket in place on the water pump rubber gasket? would permatex high tac gasket sealant be alright? I have some laying around, but if need be i can get something else.

and is it ok to get a little on the outside of the metal grove the rubber sits in? or does it need to be completely cleaned off? wasn't sure how neat it needed to be?

Hondabond or permatex. Use a few little tacks of it. No need to do the entire gasket. And yes, it is okay to get it on those surfaces.
