how to install the gearshifter knob on a 99 AT

Hi, everyone:
Something strange happened to my accord. The gear shift knob just poped out........after some inspection, I found that 2 locknuts were loose and that make the whole thing just pop out. I have all the parts including 2 locknuts. But just cant put the whole thing together and put them back on.
I was able to put them all in, but the knob just could go low enough for me to tight those locknuts. If I dont put in the spring, the whole knob can be pressed low and the hole on the knob can lineup with the hole on the metal level. but when I put in the spring, it cant go low enough.
Am I missing something? thx

as for the shifter....im assuming its the stock piece? if so, just make sure youve got everything put back together inside the shifter when you go to put it on. its been a while since ive messed with the auto shifter, but from what i remember with my old 6g, it wasnt too hard, haha.
