They are DESIGNED to spin in place, unless you hold them with a secondary tool.

New links don't spin. Worn links do.

They're cheap to replace, so you might as well. You're more than likely going to tear the boot on the endlink taking them off and once that happens the joint is compromised and will wear much faster than normal.
