the reason it might fail/become worse after a drain is that theres little chunks of metal floating around (the trans is metal-to-metal contact, after all)...when you take out the drain plug, youll go "holy ****" and see what i mean.

well...those chunks "fill the cracks" if you will...and if you take em out, the trans will run worse.

i did (probably) the only change my car has ever seen at like 140k. my solenoids dont work right but as far as i can tell, the trans shifts the same as before the fluid change.

I assume you meant after a "flush" vs. a "drain." No harm in doing a simple drain/refill and it's normal to see VERY tiny bits of metal gunk on your trans drain plug. A flush, OTOH, could knock some bigger bits of gunk loose = fail.
