If you're making money on your lenses then the 17-55 2.8 is well worth it. If not you can get just as good of shots for a lot less money. You just won't be as quick/versatile. 7D sounds amazing for a sports shooter.- xluben

For a crop the 17-55 2.8 IS is the way to go. 24 or 28mm on the wide end isn't really wide enough for large groups indoors (on a crop).- xluben

Canon T1i or the Nikon D5000 are going to be the best places to start if you want to stay mainstream. Just remember that once you commit to a brand and start buying good glass it will be VERY expensive to switch. I would probably try asking this in a larger photography forum, not one that...- xluben

A few of them I did were shorter events, so there a lot of first timer's and less serious participants. Some were on mountain bikes, etc. The last one I did was a half Ironman and just about everyone was all decked out with nice wetsuits and most had Cervelo's for their biking section!- xluben
