    I don't think an extra 1/2 quart is going to cause your seals to go bad. These are old cars and seals age. If you check my earlier post, the shaft seal in the distributor is not a difficult DIY job. But see how much a shop will charge and then decide if it's worth your time to DIY.

    I placed an extra washer under the adjusting nut and that helped create enough clearance between the nut and timing cover to slip the rubber washer over the nut.

    Thanks, that's good to know. I might put another (metal) washer underneath the tensioning nut so that it sits taller relative to the lower cover, which should make it easier to get the rubber washer between the nut and lower cover.
