Well its a bit easier to drop a manual tranny for a clutch job and put the manual tranny back in vs swapping which is much more involved. Example: On my dad's 2000 protege we dropped the tranny and changed the rear main seral and the clutch and had the car driving again in 6 hours. All the work done in the same garage as my 5 speed swap and using the same tools. All with no lift.

Heh...the reason I swapped to a manual 5-speed was my auto was leaking fluid from somewhere, couldn't determine where exactly as it just accumulated on the bottom seam, but I couldn't stop it with new axle seals and concluded it had to be a main seal. Also as far as driving it , it was starting to hesitate and jerk hard when shifting gears for the first 10 minutes of driving .....Thus I decided to use it as an excuse to swap to a 5-speed. Anyway it was pretty grubby-looking alright....the whole bottom of my car was slicked in tranny fluid.

The "engine hoist"....necessity is the mother of invention. It worked.
