wine. champagne(if not from Champagne, France, it's called sparkling wine) is good also. but most champagne/sparkling wine taste the same to me. wine, there's a lot of variety. only now am i starting to drink more red wine than white wine. but i'm still learning about wine as it's a useful knowledge to have in my field of work.

Champagne= puking and horrible, horrible hangovers. I try to stay away unless it's like a special occasion.

For most parties 2buck Chuck from Trader Joe's is fine. It's surprisingly good for a 2 dollar wine.
As far as other wines go. 20 dollar bottles you usually get good quality wine. You can find great quality great tasting wines for 10bucks but you will have to look.
People who are really into wine end up reading revies and book on it because brand differ from year to year. I find it easiest to ask for suggestions at a dedicated wine store.

As far as red vs white. I personally hate white wine it gives me the gag effect for some reason. For reds I like Pino or Crozes Hermitage. They are very sour tasting. I also grew to like Port and Shery they are very sweet and very high in alcohol.

For girls, the most generic solution is pink or white wines. They have to be chilled though. You CAN try going with Port but you should probably have a backup wine.
If you want to be fancy get Riunite Lambrusco it's carbonated red wine. Drink it chilled. And if you really want to be fancly have some fresh rasberies at the table with the wine.

IMO this is the best post on here yet. Most girls over the age of 21 or so that are REAL wine drinkers won't even touch anything pink:puke: Most women who are white wine drinkers prefer chardonnay or pinot grigio. If you are going red, try pinot noir (it's a little more expensive). And watch the movie Sideways "I AM NOT DRINKING ANY F***ING MERLOT!"
I try to stay away from champagne when possible. When you're drinking it, it makes your stomach hurt from the bubbles, gives you wicked nasty farts, and usually gives you a terrible hangover. But it creates a hell of a happy drunk (usually) so it's usually worth it to get drunk on champagne about onnce a year. Just chug a glass or two of water before you pass out on the bed drunk (pray you don't pee the bed) and normally the hangover is not as bad.

merlot is ok, but i'd rather use it in sauces and such just like port wine. i started off drinking riesling more than any other wine cause i have a sweet taste that i usually prefer. i'm finding out that expanding my flavors is much better. too bad i don't take note of the red's that i've been drinking at some parties that i really like. here on maui, they've been making some wines out of pineapple. i sampled quite a few and they are pretty tasty.

me and my gf are both chefs so i hate to seem biased but its not about the wine its about the food, lol. All wines can be great, Reds, whites, blushes, sparkling, french, itanian, californi.....an?(is that a word?). you cant say a merlot is better than a white zinfindel but you could say that it would go much better with say, a red meat while the zin would be better with a fish. You should always enjoy wine with food even if its just a snack of some food that you eat casually like burgers or hamburger helper(seriously). To say that the female species enjoys a certain wine more than the male is kinda silly cause even if 2 out of 3 women enjoy white more than red your still gonna want to not look foolish in front of any of them. If you pair all wines up with the right foods (or vise versa) your always gonna please your special lady friend. Wines are a science you cant casually master them so the best thing to do is go out and buy a bottle of each and grab alot of food. Get some yellow tail, its not horrible but its nothing fantastic however there cheap and can be found anywhere, since its the same producer it will give you a control to try each type of wine and see how they differ from each other. Dont try and figure out which you "like" and which you dont. So if you really wanna impress a girl ask her what kind of food she likes and then go impress her by matching the right wine to it.

I guess my tastes are just not that sophisticated. I know the standard talk about matching wine with food. But in the end it IS about what wine I like because if I don't like it the food won't help much.
Also wine is not always about dinner, people drink wine casually at parties and gatherings. So in a way it is important to find a wine that you yourself will enjoy without any aid from food.
The "what wine a girl would like" idea is in a way the same thing. You try to find the most likely solution to what wine a girl would enjoy on it's own.
Of course if you are more sophisticated then you should be able to guess the kind a wine someone would like based on their taste.

I find that when people first start drinking wines they go with white wines. Rieslings, chardonnays, pinot grigio, etc. Rieslings are great IMO, buy a bottle made in Germany, don't bother with anything over $10, either, I've found them to actually taste no where near as good as the $8 bottles of Riesling. Chardonnays are a very nice, smooth wine if you get a decent one. Avoid the really cheap ones here, as they always taste kinda "soapy" to me. $15-20 will get you some quality chards. Pinot grigio is a very light wine, one of my favorite whites, Santa Margherita is always a good buy at around $20 a bottle, and Maso Canali is just as good IMO and can usually be had for around $16 a bottle.

Reds tend to have much more body than whites do. I'm just getting into some reds now. Malbec has been my favorite so far, followed by pinot noirs, and shiraz. Beaujolais noveau is not bad either.

My general rule for wine drinking is that unless it's a riesling I don't spend less than $10-12 for a bottle of wine.
