Dim Low Beam and No High Beam

Hey everyone!

First post here. Brief intro: I have owned two accords and loved them both. First was a 97 EX 5MT (F22b1) and second is a 2001 EX Auto (F23). Currently my daily is an 03' IS300 but both Hondas are on the road today and running strong. I've done plenty of mechanical/maintenance on all of my cars but electrical is not my strong suit.

The problem is actually my little brothers 98 LX Auto (F23) that he just purchased 2 days ago. Mileage is pretty high (~175K) but the engine is clean and seems to have been maintained/serviced well.

The headlight on the drivers side is causing problems. At first the low beams worked but the high beam was intermittent and had a mind of it's own. Put in a new bulb and things got worse. Now the low beam and the orange fog/parking/whatever bulb are VERY VERY dim and high beam won't come on at all.

Replaced all of the bulbs on that side, no help. Have triple checked the specs on the bulbs, they are correct. Checked fuses, no issues. All other corners of the car work fine: brake lights, blinkers, passenger side lights, all good!

Not sure where to look from here. Short? Bad relay/solenoid? New headlight assembly?

Also, not sure if it's related but the windshield fluid pump/motor doesn't seem to be working (not humming). May be it's own problem but with electrical I'm not making any assumptions!

Sorry for the novel, just want to get my little bro back on the road enjoying his new ride. Appreciate any feedback and suggestions!

Just to verify that the fuse is indeed in working condition, I'd try swapping it with the passenger fuse. Maybe it's just broken elsewhere and not blown? Definitely can't hurt. Not sure how a new headlight assy would help as this definitely sounds electrical. I just feel like it's gotta be one of those 20A fuses.

Pump being a separate issue, I'd verify the presence of voltage with a multimeter when someone is pulling the windshield wiper stalk. You'll find yourself pulling the front bumper to make this accessible but once you pull it once and replace all the clips you ended up breaking after cursing at them for fifteen minutes, it goes on and off real easy. Maybe that's a fuse too.

Number 2 and other complimenting parts should get you working again if there is voltage and the pump definitely isn't running.

The light sounds like a ground issue. Get a voltmeter, car headlights on. Backprobe connector. One probe on battery, one on headlight. Check + to +, - to -. the high one is your problem. If it is -, it is also the problem for highbeam.

Thanks, James! I will get back in and verify the fuses. IF and when I get a chance I will tackle that front bumper and check the pump. For now I just want to get the car safe to drive at night. Will update when I have some new info.

Update:

Went back in and replaced the 20A fuses, regardless of look or not being blown. Spent a bit of $ but well worth it because all of the lights work perfectly now!

Admit I feel stupid not catching this myself but wanted to say thank you to XCI and especially James for their advice.

The washer fluid motor is still kapoot for now and I hope to deal with that this weekend.

Thanks again!

odd, anyway, might be a dead pump, back-probe while -running- to find if prob is gnd, pump, relay (probe here AFTER the pump if need to continue), or switch.

Probly need a helper for this.

Not a problem! Just glad the car is safe once again. Again, with a voltmeter and a couple paperclips into the pins of the connector, verify the presence of voltage while operating. If there is, go ahead and replace the pump from the previously provided link or your favorite parts store. New used cars are always full of their share of little problems. It always very pleasurable once you successfully alleviate them all!

xci.ed6, definitely odd but I have experienced the issue before. Hopefully you never have this issue because stupid things like this will stump you for hours.
