As you might have expected, the adaptation and re-engineering of the military 6x6 – dropping in AMG’s big-cube V8 – has seen costs spiral compared to the regular G 63 AMG. Are you sitting down? The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6x6 will cost in the region of $530,000. While it will be a production vehicle elsewhere, we somehow doubt it will be sold in Canada.
Not content with adding a third axle to the regular G-Class, Mercedes has also dropped AMG’s awesome 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine into the 6x6’s chassis. That means 544 hp and a tortuous 560 lb.-ft. of torque is sent to all six of the vehicle’s wheels through a super-complex system of differentials and transfer boxes.
Despite all that power, the extra engineering for the new drivetrain and chassis reinforcements over the normal G-Class (the 6x6 was originally a military vehicle) has added a significant amount of mass. The G63 6x6 weighs 3.8 tonnes, but strong traction and that blistering engine mean it will still complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in less than six seconds, with a top speed limited to 160 km/h.
Thoughts?
