If you interact with the artist and are general easy to work with and let the artist tell you what will work and what won't.

    black is the cheapest
black with gray shading is in the middle
    color is the highest.

my 2"X5" on my chest is black with red and black shading - $150
my 3"x10" on my ribs is black - $150
my 1"x3/4" cross on my wrist is black - $40

all depends on the artist and expect to pay more if you don't bring artwork or pick flash from the wall. I did all my own art.

A good artist will be able to draw it for you. Pictures will help... how big are you thinking?

Here is mine a few minutes after it was done. Mine was done by my best friend, Jason Till, he works at Artisan tattoo.

    Re: Tattoo's

I have around 30 tattoos, so I am just going to post a couple of my favorites. The first is my thigh piece portrait of my grandparents. Done by Chance Isbell at Black Hive Tattoo.

Second is the inside and outside of my right elbow done by Philip Szlosek at Inksmith and Rodgers.

I am a huge fan of traditional style tattoos, and that is what most of mine are. I collect everything from simple piece of oldschool flash that I like, to more meaningful custom pieces. Oh, and in the above pictures these are both taken by the artists on their Iphones directly after the tattoo. You can notice in both that there is some swelling and redness in certain areas.
