optimas are expensive. i wanna get a red top later on, cuz itll give me a little more and i dont really need the yellow top cuz i dont have a big system. but im also gonna be doing the DIY ground kit thing on this site, cuz its only $30 and itll help a little with stability.

Optima battery is nothing special, its just like a regular battery. I had two amps a kicker 800, fosgate 250, n 1 farad cap. My lights still dimmed with a reg. batt. and also a optima. It didnt make no difference. Best thing would be to get a high amp. alt. and good wiring.

^^ I noticed that too, theres a shop in town that rebuilds alternators for more output. I'm thinking of doing that. For now, I've still got the red top Optima. Its good that they have a 5 year (I think) replacement guarantee.

I'm thinking I shouldn't bother with the optima battery now. Its really not gonna help with your stereo unless you have your car is turned off with the stereo running which I never do. The cold cranking amps is higher which is good but you can get a diehard battery with higher cca which isn't a big deal.

if anyone is considering getting their stock alternator "rebuilt" for more output, dont do it. all they do is put on a smaller pulley and change some of the stuff inside. itll give you maybe 10-20 amps, but it isnt reliable. itll spin itself to death and melt. if youre going to replace the alternator, get it from an aftermarket company. for all the fellow audio enthusiats, i highly recommend reading car audio and electronics. ive got a subscription to it, and this is where i found out about the alternator issue.

and the point of an optima battery is that it can put out more power (aka volts) for a longer time when the alternator is overwhelmed by the current draw of the system versus a stock battery. its not about the cca's at all, because thats just the amout of power the battery can store. what matters is how long the battery can give those under use, and how much it can be recharged when power is used. so when you have your massive stereo cranked, its actually the battery providing some power in addition to the alternator, which is at its max ouput. the optima helps because it it doesnt deplete as much as a wet-cell battery (think of radioactive decay; it can only stay radioactive for a certain amount of time, since it gives up some of its particles in producing power). if you have it cranked all the time, get a better alterntor. if you crank it once in a while, get an optima. if your stereo is f-in huge, get both. if your headlights dim with a relatively small stereo, try a 5+ farad capacitor. just my $.02:rolleyes:
