Hi, new guy here from northeast PA. I’m flipping a 98 accord and ran into an issue so figured I’d come to the experts.
Bought the car to flip. Car was a daily but needed work for inspection. Previous owner felt the car wasn’t worth putting the $ into and bought a new one. I checked car out, took it for a ride etc then decided to buy it. Patched up the brake line, put new bumper, new struts, new battery. At some point I took it to car wash to blast off the motor/engine bay. (Leaky valve cover I believe so I wanted to get rid of the oil/gunk and start fresh) Here’s where my problem started: now the trans is slipping. It did NOT slip before. 1st and reverse work fine. But 2,3,4 slip and/or won’t even engage (just revs) but sometimes if I baby it it will shift or what I noticed today is if it slips I put in neutral then to the gear and it engages. I know the trans is a weak spot for these cars. I removed the solenoids and checked the screens. They were all clean (A solenoid had the tiniest little bit of something but was far from even half clogged/blocked) A solenoid had already been replaced recently (within a year). I checked the solenoids, they do click. I was unsure how far the plunger is supposed to move in the solenoids so I did (today) just replace B and C because they are the ones that control those gears. The problem is still there but not as bad. I dont think it’s torque converter or linear solenoid because sometimes it works ok or if I go from neutral to that gear it will work fine. Im stumped. I’m not gonna pull the trans apart for the internal filter or replace trans. Car has higher miles but is in decent shape and everything works. Again, it seems that after I cleaned up the engine bay the issue started. So that being said: did I knock a vacuum hose off or something stupid that I’m just missing? I did drain/fill trans with Amsoil (that supersedes the Honda ATF that I’m told these cars need) any ideas? Yes, I know these trans you warm up the shut car off then check fluid unlike a typical car that you check while running. Fluid level is fine, wasn’t burnt, foamy etc.
My gut feeling is that the internal clutches are going bad but again, car shifted just fine etc until after I washed engine bay. That’s when the problem seemed to start. Please help Thanks, Boz
