Trans Seal - Rubber facing in or out?

My cv axle trans seal fell out while working on it. I'm not sure if the rubber side is towards the axle or the trans.

There's a flat side and a rubber side. Does anyone know which way it goes in?

the retaining spring is towards the inside, and if it fell i would get a new seal.

Alright thanks. There is one of these on both sides? I got this from the junkyard and don't recall seeing it on the passenger side.
