Hey guys recently bought a 2000 Accord LX V6 for my sons first car. Its a cream puff, 1 owner, garage kept 160,000 miles. I'm having a weird tranny issue though. trans shifts beautifully, but when I'm coming to a stop it doesn't seem to shift back down to 1st gear on its own. If i put it in neutral and back to drive its fine. If i leave it in drive and just take off it seems to start in either 2nd or 3rd then down shifts fairly quickly and off we go.

anyone have any ideas on what would be causing this?

I'm hoping its an easy fix. we only paid 1500 bucks for it, and have every service record for it from day 1.

I applaud you in your choice of an old Honda for your kid's first car. And not only because this is a 6GA enthusiast forum hah, but also because I see so many parents buying their kids really nice first cars nowadays, which as a parent I personally disagree with.

Anyway, my first thought is change the trans fluid with OEM Honda DW-1. If still persisting, try cleaning the shift solenoids.

change it, drive it 100 miles, change it again, 100 miles then one more time. My 2000 LX V6 has developed a shifting issue and I have replaced all solenoids, and the speed sensor. Just about to put it back together. 350k miles, LOVE this car so I am determined to resolve it.

I have the same issue with my 300000 mile 2001 in January, 2025. I remove the battery and then the double solenoid from the top of the transmission.
There are three little metal tubes sticking out on the granny. I pull them out and carefully removed the little tiny screens inside the tubes and cleaned them. They were dirty. Put everything back and a year later is doing the samething again. But it lasted 10 month working fine. I have not changed solenoid yet.

alright this issues gets stranger.
I replaced the shift linear solenoid and the lockup/shift solenoid, replaced the inline filter and drained/filled the fluid with genuine honda DW-1 fluid.

now the car doesnt want to shift out of first and when it does it shifts super hard at a super high RPM. I am also getting a check engine light and the D4 light flashing.

not sure how it got worse with replacing parts. any ideas??

Pull the code.

It's likely it needed a transmission replacement the whole time, the new solenoids and fluid are just making it more apparent.
