windshield wipers slam down when in use - why?

so my girlfriend's 01 V6 coupe has this problem. her windshield wipers, when turned on anything above int. slam down. and it sounds horrible. and it seems a bit dangerous, IMO. she really cant use her wipers in the rain. i applied Rain-X for now, as a temp. but i need to get this fixed.
anyone know why, or has anyone had this problem?
advice appreciated. thanks guys.

i would say check the linkage system. maybe one of the plastic gromits broke. also the nut that holds down the wiper motor. it could have got loose.

Yea, the plastic joints in the wiper linkage are worn out, it's a $20 part for the new linkage and it just snaps in
