it sounds like it is an air leak... either from a hole in the cone, a rip/tear between the cone & suspension, or the box itself (do you have a speaker gasket?). it is also possible that the pole has ripped away from the spider, which you can see if you take the sub out and look behind the cone.

if the vc is burnt.... lay the box/sub so that the cone is facing up, and very carefully push the cone straight down (hands directly across from each other works best). if there is a grinding noise, then its starting to seize up and will need rebuilt or replaced depending on whatever is cheaper.

Sorry for bumping my thread for the thousandth time, but what is a speaker gasket? I don't think I have that.

It's material that helps seal the sub to the box.
