i've seen deer hits that totalled the car... or rolled up and cracked the windshield...

I was doing about 40, no airbags, it just hit and then flew about 25 ft off the side of the road

You got very lucky. Being in the insurance claims business in Mississippi, I have seen some aweful things. Deer that went all the way through the windshield, etc. When that happens you would not believe the amount of blood. It is frickin gruesome. Plus we have some monster whitetail down here. I was coming home from a friend's house a while back and saw one just standing on the side of the road in a blind curve. If He had decided to jump out I would have been toast. He looked around 300 lbs or so. I've never seen a whitetail that big. A friend of mine killed one that weighed 280 when we were in high school. this one was bigger.
