With those choices I would choose the motor. But the canon cheaper zooms suck. I think nikons are more bearable. You could always find somewhere to buy it and take it back after you try it if you don't like it.

I guess it depends on the range you are wanting. I have been strongly considering dropping my old 18-55 kit and getting the 18-105VR kit lens. It would be nice to have the bigger range and VR would be awesome. I personally have taken tons of pictures with my 18-55 and they never look "cheap"

http://houston.craigslist.org/ele/2132037468.html <-- 55-200

http://houston.craigslist.org/ele/2131944075.html <-- erics suggestion 18-105

http://houston.craigslist.org/pho/2125349381.html <-- my suggestion 18-200 i know it's a little above your price range right now by about 200 but i'm sure you can talk him down to about 450 if you're willing to.

picked up a speedlight tonight :leeann: now i just gotta figure out how to use it properly. haha

really? could you elaborate? seems to get strong reviews

its just personal preference really. the couple of people i know that own it almost never use it and dont take care of them but i dont really know anything that's closely comparable. i've got the 70-210 which has its own problems sense its a 25 yr old lens but i love it cause it has a close focal distance and a constant aperture of 4.

The 18-105, 18-135, or 18-200 could be a reasonable alternative tho. you could sell your kit lens so you only have 2 lenses to carry around
