Yeah pick your poison. Pay to fix it or get a low amount for a car with a bad tranny.

The tranny in my 2000 Accord EX is still OK, but since I like to repair things, I decided to get a spare BX7A tranny to rebuild, as I've rebuilt a Ford AOD before.

The whole market for these trannies is a ripoff!!! I checked around, and a tranny shop will charge up to around $3500 for a rebuild. A local wrecking yard had one used tranny and they wanted $2000 for it! A used tranny????

If you check the major tranny rebuilders that will ship nationwide, they still want around $1500 for a rebuilt unit. One rebuilder was selling units with a 100,000 mile warrantee but guess how much they want for a rebuilt unit??? $5000! And you still have to install it yourself.

Junkyards that ship nationwide want around 800-1500 for a used tranny with upwards of 110,000 miles. Ridiculous!

I found a BX7A off Craigslist for $450, which is pretty much the going rate.

Holy ripoff batman. Part of the costs you're getting have to be due to the fact you live in Hawaii, I've never heard anyone getting estimates that high for a reman'd auto.

Here's one for $150. That's how much I sold mine for, it was still strong at 133k miles.

Not sure he'd ship it though.

Actually the costs I got for remanufactured and salvage yard stuff is from a nationwide retailer. Amazon sells remanufactured trannies for around $1100, but not sure that is shipped to HI. But like I said, one salvage yard in HI wanted $2000 for a used unit. Pretty ridiculous.

Unless you install it yourself, figure $500 for labor.

The rebuild kits alone can be quite expensive. $200-250 without hard parts and around $500 with a few bearings. $150 would be a nice deal especially since I'm rebuilding it anyway. At least the one I bought is not slipping. The problem with getting a malfunctioning tranny is some hard parts may be expensive to replace, e.g., bearings and stuff, if they go too.
