I brought my car into the Honda Dealership today for my 60k maintenance. I was priced $400. About 2 hours after I dropped the car off, the guy at the dealer calls me and tells me I need to replace my timing belt, water hose, rear shoe brakes, and upper and lower radiator hoses. I asked him how much all of this will cost me, he said $3000. I said no, just do the maintenance. I called a local privately owned shop and they told me the timing belt and water hose will cost me $488. Anyways, why is Honda charging $3000? I know its a dealership but its a huge price difference..

All belts (including timing belt) and a full inspection should cost $800 at the dealer. I just had that done about 2 weeks ago and my total bill for all belts etc. plus oil change was $837 I think. Replacing hoses you should be able to do yourself with your eyes closed. Keep in mind that Honda is giving you the total that would bring your vehicle up to "Honda" specs, whether you want that or not is up to you...

I'm bringing my car into a shop maybe tomorrow, they probably wont use the same timing belts Honda use. Is it a bad idea to use belts that privately owned shops use?
