Maybe it was bad lighting in the store... :lawl: I only eyed it up for a few seconds. You tested out a used lens that you own? :eh: Or were you testing out the T1i?
I asked to look at a 2x extender, and while he was trying to dig one up, I
figured I'd fondle the T1i for a while. When he finally got the extender I put it
on with the 70-200 2.8 IS, because it's a very similar setup to what I had.

It's pretty amazing that the T1i has expandable ISO up to a full 3 stops faster
than my camera! Unfortunately from what I could tell on the back of the LCD
was that 12800 is completely unusable. 6400 would probably be OK for web
images and maybe 5x7's or so.

I looked at the T1i when I was body shopping... it didn't have much over the 40D besides megapixels and ISO, neither of which are very practical reasons to choose the T1i over a 40D with more custom functions and "pro" features.

Live view is the most useless thing by far though. The only time I've used it was to try it out and every time my forehead accidentally bumps the SET button during vertical shots, haha.

Zooming in to "10x" to manually focus or blindly try to autofocus on a subject you can't see because the mirrors up just makes it completely useless. Previewing exposure on the LCD is somewhat useful in tricky situations though.

I'd go for the 40D over the T1i for sure, but high ISO performance is really important to
me. I'd love to have a usable ISO6400, but I'd also like the much faster frame rate of the
xxD line of bodies. For those reasons combined, I'm planning on holding off for the 60D
even though I was nearly dead-set on getting the 40D this summer. Once the 60D comes
out I'll have to evaluate if its features are worth the extra money over the 40D (which will
probably be nearly double by then!).

I am thinking about getting the 2x extender. It is nice to be able to have that extra "reach" sometimes. Even if it does decrease your effective aperture.

What do you normally use your lens for? I was pretty un-impressed looking at most of the
shots (crops especially) from 2x converters. If you really need 400mm and shoot
outdoors, then trading for a 100-400 L + lots of cash seems like a good option

It will be as fast or faster at every focal length, much better image quality across the
board, still has IS, and costs a LOT less. If I thought I could handle the aperture range I
would have it for sure. If it weren't for 6 months of indoor sports in MN, I don't doubt
that it would be on my camera instead of the 70-200 right now...

I typically shoot indoors and on-stage shots. Usually I am very far from the "action" because i gotta monitor a soundboard when I'm photographing performances.

So primarily, just for reach haha.
