what you all recommend best bang for your buck. i'm also looking at upgrading my speakers

Components with amp or just coaxils?

The best bang for the buck IMO is the Phoenix Gold 6.5: Components. $60 and they have some good sound quality

theres a used set of 6.5s on diyma with unused crossovers for $50...though they might be gone by now.

Personally I prefer the pioneer coaxials, I have the RE components in the front and the 6.5" in the kicks, they sound pretty good to me.

Pioneer D series, are a little expensive but if you search online you can get a good deal on those, I picked my 6.5" for $80.00 and the 6x9" for $90 with free shipping.

It really depends on budget, what you want, and specifically what type of music you listen to. Each speaker sounds different and if you can, experience as many of them as you can to see which fit the type of music you listen to..
