Why do my subs sound like crap??

(excuse my often lack of technical terms, I am a huge n00b at car audio)

Okay, i recently got a Kicker ZX1000.1 amp, with two 10" Kicker CVT subs, in one of those thin boxes that are made for trucks. Well, I can't even turn the gain on the amp over like 1/8 before the subs make an awful rattling-like sound, but it's not the subs making the sound, I think it is the box. Like if I turn it up to make the rattling sound, then lay on the middle of the box, putting all my body weight on the box, it will stop making the sound.

I noticed the middle of the back of the box vibrates more than it should at a corner. Is it possible that my box is broken?

I got it all used, btw.

sounds like your box sucks. have you tried putting more screws in it?

No, i haven't had much time to play with it. I did however tighten every last screw on each sub, so it can't be the subs rattling.

What should I do to that side of the box? Just add more screws?

EDIT: Do CVT's sound good in bigger boxes? or are they made specifically for boxes with less air space?

Build a new box. Are you on any car audio forums? Usually if you post a thread on a car-audio only forum and explain what subs you have, what you'd like out of your system, and how much trunk space you have to work with, some kind soul will design a box for you. Or you can download some software and give it a shot yourself, it's not that difficult.

You definitely need a box and it sounds like the one you currently have is too small for your subs. Look into the specs for your subs and get a corresponding box and it'll be worlds different.

Edit: Also I believe the CVTs do like a little more space in a box from the setups I've seen

if you are a n00b with car audio, i would not recommend building a box. unless its sealed, then go for it, thats easy

ive been into car audio for only 4 years and still wouldnt attempt to build a ported box, pre fab boxes work just dandy

Oh I know enough to not trust my self to even think of building my own ported box.

but it looks like they are meant for smaller boxes, so i'd just either look for another slim box or glue and screw the living **** out of your box, but not so much so that you **** up the integrity of the box

if you can find the specs of the box for your sub...building a box is not that difficult....as long and you can cut the wood straight your good....other than that dont bother lol....cutting wood is not as easy as it sounds....i got my wood cut in homedepot and not even they made straight cuts with the machine...but das your best bet have a place cut your wood and you put it together....
