can I just take it somewhere and ask them to read it for me?

Yep, Autozone or Advance. Or if you don't trust them maybe they can rent you one. Or a shop could scan it. Or your dealer.

I'd honestly say buy a scanner...even if it is just a cheap one that only shows the codes. It's good to have on you when that light pops up and you're nowhere close a dealer or auto parts store.
