What does adjusting the preload do? Is that some type of way to adjust the stiff or softness?

No. That is damping adjustability.

Adjusting the preload is pretty much making your shocks shorter/longer so it doesn't bottom out. Pretty much preventing you from bottoming out

Adjusting spring preload will change the amount of force/load needed to make the spring compress. Once the load/force results then compression begins as per usual and it proceeds at whatever rate the spring is.(this does not apply to progressive springs as with them spring rate changes through the compression range) Cranking the preload higher just means you will now need a much bigger bump before the wheel can start moving up/down along the damper travel.

Adjusting the spring preload more then the manufacturer specified 5mm will indeed have an effect on ride feel.

PS. Dampening adjust-ability simply controls an oil orifice inside the damper shaft through the small knob the user turns. The oil orifice has a series of holes for oil to flow through when the shock compresses. The more holes open the faster oil flows and hence the easier movement(softer). The less holes open, the slower oil flows and hence the harder the movement(stiffer)

I have to say IMO function form type1's aren't as bad as d2 racing coilovers. Those were harsh in my integra. But the type1's don't compare in comfort and performance like tanabe & tein coilovers.
