The Sigma's pretty blah. I'd probably get the 17-85 even if it costs a little more. If you really want to step up, look into one the constant f/2.8 zooms. The Canon 17-55 is pretty spendy, but similar Sigma or Tamron's get good reviews and cost half as much. No problem on the 40D, just WAY...

I agree that the highlights look blown, but still a very good shot.

That's a pretty good price. They normally go for around $300 used. The real benefit of that lens isn't a 1/2 stop. It's the fact that it has USM focusing (and still has IS). Other than focusing speed the 18-55 IS is about as sharp and the aperture difference really is minimal. The 18-55...

Yes, I have a 40D for sale on Craigslist. PM me with what you had in mind. The new 70-200 2.8 IS should have the new IS, and if the last 70-200 they released was any indicator, it should be EXTREMELY sharp. The f/4 IS is probably Canon's sharpest zoom. The f/2.8 IS mkI is a bit soft on the...

I have a feeling that it will cost most current 70-200 2.8 IS owners close to a grand to sell it and buy a NIB mkII version. I don't see that it'll be worth it for me.

I'm kind of pissed they're releasing a new 70-200 2.8 IS after I got mine about a year ago! I'll wait for the reviews, but I HIGHLY doubt I'd make the switch. The original 70-200 2.8 IS is still a great lens!

I actually got rid of the XTI a while ago. I had two 40D's, which worked great, because I could mount the 17-55 to one and the 70-200 to the other. All the controls, the pictures, etc would be the same without having to swap lenses. Jumped on the 7D when a good deal popped up on Craigslist...

It's a Tour, but they're all starting to look the same aren't they! I think Verizon probably has the Pre+, Tour2, and that new Google phone coming sometime this year, but this one for $50 was just too good of a deal. I might be able to talk my brother into letting me use his update and give...

I've had good luck just bouncing a single flash and using a white background. Shot this in about 5 minutes when I got my new phone earlier today: It depends on how much you intend on shooting and developing. There's no way I'd be doing what I am doing right now if I had to shoot film...

    HELP! ID this vehicle!

Yeah, I doubt it was a mistake, just due to the fact that the (obvious) front door was totally skipped. The tire track was 7.5" wide. You can figure out approx. width based on that, but I didn't know how width was normally measured.

    HELP! ID this vehicle!

I just realized that front wheels spinning does not mean 4 wheel drive. It means that it's definitely not rear wheel drive only. I can't really tell if the rear wheels spun at all.

    HELP! ID this vehicle!

Yeah, I don't think this info is enough to do anything. I called the po-po and they said they couldn't do anything. I didn't fingerprint the doorknob yet, though. Haha, kidding. I did talk to one of the neighbors, and I might call others. Don't really know most of them though. Camera or...

    HELP! ID this vehicle!

It appears someone tried to get into my house today while I was out. Here is a picture and what I managed to figure out so far: Car1 and Car2 are my wife and I. As you can see by our tracks we went straight out of the garage this morning. You can also tell that it didn't snow...

Focal length is the same for both formats, but field of view is COMPLETELY different. To get a 73.7 degree horizontal FOV on a FF body you need a 24mm focal length To get a 73.7 degree horizontal FOV on a 1.6x body you need a 15mm focal length To get a 50.2 degree horizontal FOV on a 1.6x...

On a 1.6x crop 17mm on the wide end is very usable for walkaround. The new Canon EF-S lenses go to 15mm, which would be nice, but not needed. Definitely not going to be confused with an UWA like the 10-22, though. On a crop body 24 or 28mm on the wide end isn't really wide enough for...

1/3 of a stop is 1/3 of a stop. Nothing more than that. 17-85's focusing ability and build quality is far ahead of the 18-55. But the 18-55 is quite sharp and has a very usable range and dirt cheap.

USM focus. The 17-85 is a class above the 18-55 IS, but the 18-55 IS isn't a bad lens for the money.

I wouldn't trade my 17-55 for a 17-40 and $500. The 2.8 aperture and IS is invaluable to me. 17-40 is a great UWA on a FF body. When you put it on crop it becomes a pretty mediocre range of focal lengths and f/4 isn't all that fast.
