Haha that was for 00accord4cyl mostly... but I recommend it to everyone. And the 17 is... pretty wide. Not like 10-22 of course, but I rarely find myself wishing I had wider.

On a 1.6x crop 17mm on the wide end is very usable for walkaround.

The new Canon EF-S lenses go to 15mm, which would be nice, but not needed.

Definitely not going to be confused with an UWA like the 10-22, though.

On a crop body 24 or 28mm on the wide end isn't really wide enough for general use, IMO.

Well part of it has to do with the lens Ryan. The better made ones don't get a lot of distortion under 24... although I do see it very slightly with my tamron in the right circumstances.

On 35mm? Or a 1.6x crop?
focal length is always the same...so, both.

it depends on what we're using it for and where its pointed.

like...a key with fish eye lenses is to keep the horizon in the center of the pic to minimize distortion. focusing close also induces distortion. the kit lens can also cause it.

well i'm a fan of the 50mm viewpoint so i'm weird :lawl:

Nah that makes sense. It probably relates a lot to what you shoot too. I like to get big open shots and I bet you prefer to get up close with the subjects.

Focal length is the same for both formats, but field of view is COMPLETELY different.

To get a 73.7 degree horizontal FOV on a FF body you need a 24mm focal length
To get a 73.7 degree horizontal FOV on a 1.6x body you need a 15mm focal length

To get a 50.2 degree horizontal FOV on a 1.6x body you need a 24mm focal length
To get a 50.7 degree horizontal FOV on a FF body you need a 39mm focal length

*FF=full frame=35mm format

The 50mm focal length that you like on a 35mm format, ends up being about 3mm on a 1.6x crop body. It is considered "normal" because that is approximately the field of view that the human eye can see. It's a good walkaround length, because it provides shots with a similar perspective to what we actually see.

For added versatility most zooms will go quite a bit wider than this. For a full frame body, 24mm on the wide end allows a considerably wider field of view than "normal". But on a crop body it is really similar to the "normal" point of view and doesn't add much versatility for trying to get a group of people into 1 shot or take a picture of a large item from up close, etc.

i just deal with different field of view by taking a couple steps back :lawl: i use primes anyway so its all good :lawl:

for a walkaround kit, if i dont grab the kit lens, i will go for my 28/2.8 and 50/1.7 without hesitation. small, light, fast...both pocketable. i dont even do the "digital conversion" anymore...i think of what i want the pic to look like (more 3D...flatter...narrow depth of field) and go for it.

pentax makes a 43mm lens and technically that is the "standard" field of view, diagonally, for a 24x36mm frame. they also make weird lenses like a 21, 31, 40, 77 so most other companies just rounded up or down :lawl: some photo books will say a standard is 50-55 but ive seen some that will actually say 43-55mm.
