Hi. These shift knobs simply screw on. They do use an insert but that is permanently attached in the inside of the shift knob and is made of brass. I have never had an issue with one yet and I have sold many thousands of them.
The plastic thing he is probably talking about is the cheapo autozone type universal knobs.
