Hello all. A few weeks ago a bought a 98' Honda Accord with 95,000 it. Great shape for its age! Got it for $2600. A few days after a bought it the tranny started downshifting hard and slipping horribly. I did and drain and fill x3 and it has helped considerably with the clunking in gear, but it still slips when shifting in 1st and 2nd gear. Also when I turn it slips then catches into gear. I've done some research and it looks like this is the signs of transmission failure. It is not throwing any transmission codes.
Before I give up and get a used or rebuilt tranny, is there anything else I could try. Or if this is the end of my tranny, should I get a used one or get a rebuilt one? Is a 5 speed swap worth the time and effort? Thanks!

Welcome!!
I would definitely recommend doing a 6 speed tranny swap that is from the accord and TL since they are practically bullet proof, while the auto trans is very weak and has a history of failing.

Did you buy a v6 or i4? Either way the manual swap is the way to go. Use the search to find all the write ups and parts lists etc.

Its an I4. I am leaning toward a manual swap because I have heard about the repeated failure of these transmissions. Would it be just as much effort as to put in a automatic?

Swapping to manual is a little more involved than replacing the auto since your car did not come with it originally, obviously. But since a version of the 6GA did come from the factory as a manual, a lot of the would-be custom work is done for you. And chances are if you put in another auto…somewhere down the road you will have to replace it again.

For how much you saved paying what you did for the car, I wouldn’t hesitate to spend a little and convert it to manual. I believe most everyone has done it for less than $2500, some for much less.

I would definitely recommend doing a 6 speed tranny swap that is from the accord and TL since they are practically bullet proof, while the auto trans is very weak and has a history of failing.

Reading fail. :lawl:

It's an I4. I found a remanufactered automatic on Ebay, but they won't let me post links yet. I'm all for the 5 speed swap. The problem with a 5 speed swap is that I simply don't have the time to do it myself unless I have help. So I really am in a pickle right now... :ohsnap:

Willow Creek Transmission has several transmissions, in stock, that are overhauled and are ready to go.
· Includes a NEW HEAVY DUTY TORQUE CONVERTER!

What makes our transmission better than all the rest?

The transmissions have been overhauled with:

· New steel and friction clutches
· All new o-rings and seals
· A new internal filter
· New torque converter
· New differential bearings
· Dyno testing done on all transmissions
· An add-on external filter with magnet to catch debris from old transmission.
· All are updated, and come with A WRITTEN 24 MONTH WARRANTY

Updates Include:

· Increasing the pressure in the valve body to the torque converter so it lasts longer
· A new HEAVY DUTY torque converter
· An external filter

Since 1998 Honda and Acura torque converters have been failing product wide. It does not matter if it is an Accord, Odyssey, Pilot, MDX, and TL. The torque converters are weak and are coming apart, clogging the internal filter and in turn, allowing the transmission to slip from lack of pressure. To make matters worse, the factory cooler inside the radiator is just too small, and not transfering enough heat as it should. Installer must bypass radiator cooler and install an aftermarket cooler. The bigger the better. We sell them here, ask our sales staff for one, they are $60.

Symptoms of a failed transmission include

· Flared 1-2 and 2-3 shifts
· Long Park to Reverse or Park to drive engagement times
· In extreme cases no takeoff in forward or reverse after start up.

Our competition can’t beat our prices or quality!!!

We include a 2 year warranty with UNLIMITED miles, we are so confident in our products! Live Tech Support is included with every purchase.

Call our Qualified Technicians any time to ask questions about your install or the transmission! We’re always here to help you, our customer!

Don't waste your money on a used transmission, they only have a 30-90 day warranty, are not updated, therefore will fail just like yours has. Don't face this same problem a year from now. Used transmissions are priced about $1000-$1200, we have ours priced very competitively at just above used prices.

We have the most qualified technicians around!

Fast shipping!

If you have the money, I'd suggest converting it to manual. You'll be much happier in the long run if you plan on keeping the car. Maybe you can borrow your parents' car or buy an old worthless beater car as a temporary replacement until it's done. I ended up doing both of those options while I was doing my motor swap.
