A/C controls Failing?

I noticed the other day when i was switching between the forward dash vents and the windshield defroster that there is a mechanical whining noise and a small clunk. Does anyone know if this is a common point of failure in our cars? I'm assuming there is a motor under the dash that controls what vents the air blows out of. Does anyone know if this would be a complex fix should it eventually stop working for me?

Mine does something similar to what you're talking about. It's been doing it for a while now, I'd say a good 6 months. No problems so far.

I know that didn't help much, but I just wanted to chime in my part. lol
