I just purchased new tires from discount tire because my old Michelin harmony's were worn on the inside edges. They still had a fair amount of thread considering they were 5yrs old but the inside wear prompted me to purchase a new set. I was doing research and had my eyes on a set of budget friendly generals altimax hp's. Bad move. They installed them and I returned them back in an hr because of severe body roll when swerving . I had my alignment corrected about 3 weeks before the purchase. I ended up with the similar Michelin Destiny's. I was pleased that they were so responsive, but it felt too sensitive at high speeds. I went complaining back to the alignment shop of the car pulling to the right and b/c of the warranty and I stayed and helped the tech check the car out. I was unable to get a print out but the numbers that I wrote down were:

Before:
LF

Caster +3.5

RF

Caster +2.8

LR

Camber -1.4 (Out of spec)

LR

Camber +0.6

AFTER:

Caster

[email protected]+

[email protected]+

Thrust angle (after) @ 0.7

The toe was a little out of spec, but I don't remember how much. Toe was corrected all around to 0.0 - 0.1 degrees. We also adjusted the front caster to be more positive on the right so that the car would track strait on crowned roads. The rear camber was too neg on the left side but we couldn't address that problem without an aftermarket camber kit. Well I'm not pleased at all at this point. The steering wheel is cocked left and the car is unstable at high speeds.

Another issue is that the car has noticeable torque steer now. I have never had this problem before. The car will pull right under acceleration and veer left when between gear changes (MTX). I checked the front and side motor mounts and they seem solid.

I recently had the clutch replaced and noticed a little grease around the driver's side outer tie rod, probably indicating a broken boot, but the wheel had no play at that time, which was about 2 months ago.

I checked the air pressure and they were at about 33-34 psi. I lowered them all to specs at 29 psi. I have since removed my subs and amps trying to relieve some load on the rear of the car. These things I have done to try to narrow the problem down. The only thing that has changed since this problem occurred was the purchase of new tires. Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

Re: Alignment problems...

u might wanna go to another shop to do the alignment for u. dont think its possible to receive negative camber without being lowered unless something part of ur suspension is messed up causing the neg camber.

I haven't gone to another shop b/c the re-alignments are free for 90 days. The car was about 1 1/2 inches lower in the rear because of the two amps, extra battery, and 2 12" alpine type R's and the box. One amp alone weighs about 30 lbs. (old school sony 6 ch) and each sub weighs in at about 25-30 lbs each minus the box. Don't forget fishing poles and tackle box (just in case) :) and yeah, why have two amp if one is 6 ch? b/c its just a sub amp. The rca jacks are messed up on one side and I'm too lazy to solder new ones on.

Re: Alignment problems...

makes sense now u have negative camber in the rear due to audio weight. but the rear shouldnt affect u as much as the front. something is missing here. did this happen before u swapped for new tires? or after?

Re: Alignment problems...

I actually have altimax hps like you, and I've noticed for a while that my car veers to the right during acceleration and braking. also at times the car randomly veers left for a short time. I had my alignment checked, twice, and both times they said it's fine. Also the tire wear is even and everything, so I'm not sure what it is. You saying you are now having that problem with these tires is making think its possibly them??

Re: Alignment problems...

I returned the Altimax Hp's the first day I had them. I am experiencing this problem with the same Michelin Destiny's 195-65-15 that I originally had. The problem started after the alignment and got way worse when the new tires were installed. I remember feeling the car pulling a bit to the right after the alignment. Then after the tires were installed, the steering got really light and nervous. Yes all the tires were balanced upon installation.

Re: Alignment problems...

I purchased and installed a new front motor mount hoping to correct the torque steer. That didn't help. The other mounts look fine and are not cracked or broken. The tourque steer is still occurring at speeds above 40 mph. The other issue is that above 55 MPH if i move the steering wheel just a hair to the left, the car will continue to go that direction. If i move it just a tad to the right, it will keep going right. It's like there is no centering of the wheel, I have to white knuckle it all the way down the highway. If I don't get this corrected I will sell the car. This is very annoying. Someone please help me!

I wish I had the original numbers printed. That's when every thing was fine. I'm gonna take the car right now to another shop to get a printout of everything, SAI, thrust angles, cross camber, etc. BTW cross toe is at 0.01 in the rear from what remember. All the toe was at 0.00 -0.01 all 4 wheels.
